| Happy New Year! |
[Jan. 1st, 2010|01:24 am] |
Having lovely time at Synecdochic's.
Failed to sign up for you_know_thats_right.
About to drink absinthe.
Will soon crow about v. popular yuletide fic and well-received yuletide fic, and whine about underappreciated yuletide fic in popular fandom.
3 Ships advancing well. Only one unassigned pinch hit, and it is one I can write myself, if need be.
Tomorrow, may watch Precious. Or Fantastic Mr. Fox.

I hope everyone's having a happy New Year. I made rice balls (there will be a post! with pictures!), and now I am impatient to eat them and have some asti at midnight, so have another yuletide recs post! Probably the last one I'll get to before the reveal tomorrow.
25 recs in 18 fandoms: Up, The Hurt Locker, Friday Night Lights, Roman Holiday, The Shawshank Redemption, the Inspector Chen series, The Thief series, Middleman, The True Meaning of Smekday, Calvin and Hobbes, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Life, Fairy Tales, The Handmaid's Tale, Earthsea, and White Collar,

I have broken 1000 words on my Broken Toys story, but uh, there still seems to be a bit of story to go. Oops? I will get it written though. There's all day tomorrow. *g*

oh, and on an entirely different note, today at work was awesome. we've had really low turnout the last two weeks, and yesterday we had like 12 kids (of the normal 32), and neither of the administrators bothered to come. the appointed other person in charge decided most of the people didn't have to come in. i only had to work 2-6. that's not the best part.
when i got there, there were only eight kids. brother and sister set a, brother sister sister set b, and three miscellanious children. there were five staff (mind you two were special needs staff, but we only had one special needs child, so i'm counting them). essentially we got to play one on one, instead of patrolling for issues. that's not the best part either.
i was assigned to the gym, where like 5 of the 8 kids decided to play. one girl was really missing her mom, and i know she loves songs, so i started singing and got out the instruments. she joined in and stopped crying. that's still not the best part.
the best part... when i started taking requests (spiderman and batman and jingle bells) and asking them to sing their own songs (batman, abc's) riley burst in with WE WILL ROCK YOU!
now, obviously i can't show favourites. but riley has always been a favourite of mine, and seriously, you're three and you're into Queen? SO MUCH LOVE FOR THAT BOY. i was so impressed i started to sing the other lyrics, and he came over and grabbed the wooden guitar and pretended to play and OMG I LOVE MY JOB SOMETIMES. |

Contemplated doing one of the bajillion retrospective memes circulating, but I'm lazy tonight so I'll just say that this was an exceptionally hectic year and leave it at that. We have no big plans for tonight. Rock Band with the kids, probably some canoodling, and then sleep. Possibly marriage and kids has made me boring. Then again my New Year's Eve superstition doesn't exactly lend itself to public viewing. You? |

so my only new years resolution is fandom related: stop being so damn shy about friending people i like. i friend mainly by reading their fic, but i'm easily awed into thinking this person is amazing, way too cool for me. while i know writing is only a bit of the importance of flist, the thing is if you're posting a pot smoking incest, or a kinky weasley related pwp, i know we're on the same page.
so half the time i read something and i want to friend because i want to know more about them, but i'm totally shy. sometimes i get all creepy and stalk their journal without commenting (for an example, i've had martha's_library friended for like 6 months, and every now and then i go and look at her personal journal, but i'm too in awe of her writing to suggest i'm good enough to friend her).
so, tonight i'm going to friend at least twenty people, and hope to gain new friends in the new year. *puts on resolve!face* |

| Fandom End Of Year Meme |
[Dec. 31st, 2009|07:11 pm] |
We're on the cusp of the New Year, ready to say goodbye to the old, and welcome to the new. To project our wants and wishes for this coming year. I should be out there, mingling with friends, and dancing the night away, but I'm here, celebrating it in my own way, with a meme.
( I've been laid low by sinuses, and congestion. Onward to the meme! )
Tl:dr, fic meme and wishing you all a happy 2010 in real life and fandom. |

My Roomba is cleaning my living room using an algorithm called "The Drunkard's Walk."
Funnily enough, that's the very same method I'll use to mess up my living room later tonight. |

Interview went well. It was pretty clearly designed to test my patience and flexibility (they thought they were being stealthy, but 8-9 interruptions in one interview is just too big of a stretch) and I just kept my calm professional face on the whole time. At the end she started talking about the pay rate, room for advancement, and other such fun things before saying that HR will give me the official word next week. I think I got the job, but she never came out and said it directly (which is quite possibly their policy) so I must wait some more. *sigh* Patience is not one of my virtues. What did I miss today? |

| Snow! And, um, natural fibres! |
[Dec. 31st, 2009|04:01 pm] |
It has snowed! Yay! The world is all pristine and the old gray sludge has been covered over with shiny new snow. I love this part of the storm.
Look! The house across the street is always beautiful on snow days.
( Click to see the view down the street, and evidence of my utter lack of practicality )
In other news, did you know that 2009 was designated by the UN as the International Year of Natural Fibres? Well, it was, and my friends Leonard and Sumana made an anthem for it. It's still 2009 for a few more hours, so I encourage you to listen to the anthem of the year! |

Except for modding severus_shorts, I'm on a fandom hiatus until further notice. |
[Dec. 31st, 2009|02:53 pm] |
Except for modding severus_shorts, which I will be doing, I'm taking a fandom hiatus until further notice.
severus_shorts' Brief Birthday Celebration will begin at midnight, Eastern Time, on 9 January 2010 as scheduled, to be followed by the Brief Fics Showcase, which will run from 10 January through 8 February 2010. Please feel free to contact severus.shorts [at] gmail [dot] com if you've any questions about Severus' Shorts; I will be checking email there and at my fandom account (I will not, however, be available to chat via Y!M during my hiatus).
Circumstances may require that I cancel the next run of the snuna_exchange. If so, I'll announce its cancellation well in advance of the planned sign-up period. At this time, it's my intention to host the 2010 run of the fest.
Happy New Year, all! I hope that your 2010 begins more smoothly than mine will. *waves* |

Happy new year from Taiwan! Poor Rachel is sadly down with a cold and therefore missed the fireworks. We did, however, get tasty donburi for lunch, and hopefully her sleeping it off today will mean feeling better in time for Hong Kong.

| sometimes, even i am subject to amazement. |
[Dec. 31st, 2009|09:49 am] |
So I had planned to make a 'best of 2009 on lj' post this morning, highlighting lj posts i thought were memorable, mine or others, and reminiscing about the past year.
that was before i checked my email and found out that someone *eyes* had sent me a note letting me know about Victoria Bitter/Jordan Wood/thanfiction's very latest shenanigans. And no, this is not about the son that's really a sparrow. I'm not even going to try to explain this. I'm just going to point out that it involves the "Spirit/Astral form of technically dead but v. powerful Seneca Sachem-level shaman plus allies and minions." Thanfiction is apparently helping to defend against their psychic attacks. Fandom wank provides details and analysis. |
